캄보디아 전통 국궁 체험 Royal Archery Club

예로부터 대한민국은 활을 잘 쏘기로 유명했다. 국궁의 역사는 한민족 역사와도 함께 하는데, 군주들 중에도 명궁이 많아서 고구려를 세운 동명성왕, 조선을 세운 이성계, 그리고 정조도 명궁이었다고 전해진다. 또한 전통적으로 주변국가들의 전술을 성명할 때, ‘중국은 창, 일본은 칼, 한국은 활’이라고 했을 만큼 발달한 무기였다. 전래 동화에서도 활을 쏘아 괴물을 퇴치한 선비의 이야기도 심심치 않게 나타나고, 현재까지 하계 올림픽의 효자종목으로서 명성을 드높일 정도로 활은 한국인들에게 친근한 활동이다.

캄보디아도 역사적으로 대제국을 이룬 크메르 민족의 후예로써 활쏘기에 대한 자부심이 남다른 듯하다. 씨엠립에 위치한 궁장 Royal Archery Club은 활쏘기를 연습하고자 하는 사람들로 언제나 북적인다. 외국인은 $12, 캄보디아 인은 $7를 내면 90분 동안 활을 쏘는 체험을 할 수 있다. (장기적으로 연습하고자 하는 사람들을 위한 멤버십 제도도 있는데, 한 달 $60, 3개월 $150, 6개월 $280, 1년 $500이다.)

처음 궁장에 도착하면 안정 장비를 갖추어 입고, 전문 강사의 짧은 강의로 체험이 시작된다. 캄보디아 전통 활과 현재 사용되는 활의 차이에 대한 설명과 더불어 활 쏘는 시범과 함께 자세를 교정해준다. 과녁에 다섯 발을 쏘는 것으로 감을 잡고 나면, 동물 모형의 과녁을 쏘아 내기를 유도한다. 실제 동물 대신 사냥의 분위기를 내기 위해 늘어선 다양한 동물들을 향해 활시위를 겨누는 것만으로도 긴장감이 배가 되고 일순 모형일지라도 불쌍하게 느껴진다. 하지만 손을 떠난 화살이 의도했던 곳에 정확히 명중하면 기쁨의 탄성이 절로 나온다.

5발의 화살을 쏘고 나면, 점수를 낸 후, 화살을 다시 뽑아오기 위한 휴식시간을 가진다. 활을 쏘고, 화살을 주워오고를 무한 반복하다보면 90분은 금세 지나가는데, 익숙하지 않은 활시위를 당기다 생긴 피멍이 훈장처럼 남는다. 활은 숙달하는 데에 평생 지속적인 훈련이 필요하다는 선조들의 말씀이 거짓이 아님을 직접 온몸으로 확인 할 수 있다. /신보람
