프놈펜의 과거와 현재 일상을 품은 시장 센트럴 마켓

노란빛 돔 아래로 들어서면 프놈펜의 하루가 한눈에 펼쳐진다. 반짝이는 장신구와 화려한 천, 열대과일과 향신료가 가득한 좌판 사이로 상인들의 목소리와 손님들의 발걸음이 끊임없이 오간다. 시민들에게는 익숙한 장보기 공간이지만 여행자에게는 캄보디아의 생활과 취향을 가까이에서 만나는 특별한 장소다.
현지에서는 ‘새 시장’이라는 뜻의 ‘프싸 트마이’로 불린다. 1937년 완공된 아르데코 양식의 건물은 거대한 중앙 돔과 네 방향으로 이어진 통로가 특징이다. 오래된 건축물 안에 오늘의 삶이 자연스럽게 이어지는 센트럴 마켓은 프놈펜의 과거와 현재를 함께 걷게 한다.

Step beneath the market’s distinctive yellow dome and the rhythm of Phnom Penh quickly comes into view. Jewellery glitters beneath the lights, colourful fabrics hang from tightly packed stalls and the scent of tropical fruit, spices and freshly prepared local food drifts through the busy aisles.
Known locally as Phsar Thmey, meaning “New Market,” Central Market is far more than a place to shop. Completed in 1937, its vast central dome and four radiating wings remain one of Phnom Penh’s finest examples of Art Deco architecture. Inside, visitors can browse jewellery, clothing, electronics, household goods and souvenirs before stepping into sections filled with fresh produce, seafood and Cambodian snacks. It is a place where the city’s architectural heritage blends naturally with the colours, sounds and routines of everyday Cambodian life.
