시엠립 북부 프엉 타논, 신비로운 암석지대

최근 캄보디아 결혼 시즌을 맞아 웨딩 촬영의 장소로 각광받는 숨겨진 명소들이 SNS를 통해 소개되고 있다. 그 중 하나가 거대한 사암군으로 신비로운 분위기를 자아내는 프엉 타논 Peung Tanon이다. 거대한 돌들이 분지를 이루어 만들어 내는 장관 앞에 서면 신들의 놀이터에 와있는 착각에 빠지게 된다.

프엉 타논은 시엠립 시내에서 북쪽으로 70여 킬로미터 떨어진 지역에 있다. 거리상으로는 얼마 되지 않지만 도로 사정이 좋지 않아, 약 2시간정도 걸린다. 오토바이나 툭툭보다는 4륜 구동차를 추천한다. 포장된 도로를 따라 약 50여 킬로미터 따라 가면, 입구 표지판이 보이고 여기서부터 9킬로미터 가량 비포장도로를 따라가야 입구가 나온다. 입구에서부터 10여 분간 야트막한 산길을 따라 가볍게 걷다보면 작은 사원이 보인다. 사원 너머로 자연적으로 형성된 신비한 지질학적 특징을 오롯이 담고 있는 환상적인 경관이 펼쳐진다.

화려한 꽃들과 싱그러운 녹색 잎이 만든 자연의 카펫 사이로 사암층과 기괴 암석들이 조화를 이루며 서 있는 광경 앞에 어떠한 수식어도 빛이 바랜다. 색색의 아름다운 나비들과 더불어 특이한 종의 도마뱀을 바위틈에서 발견하는 소소한 기쁨도 있다.

일설에 의하면 오래 전 캄보디아 지역이 바다에 잠겨 있었을 때 만들어진 지형이며, 크메르 루즈 시절에는 요새로도 사용된 적이 있다고 한다. 프엉 타논의 또 다른 멋진 점은 캄보디아 시골 풍경이 내려다보이는 놀라운 전망이다. 바위 분지의 가장자리로 가면 초록빛의 너른 푸른 논, 물소, 흔들리는 야자수와 붉은 도로를 한 눈에 볼 수 있다.

요정처럼 바위 사이를 폴짝폴짝 뛰어다니며 경관을 즐기기 위해서는 편안한 신발이 필수다. 또한 식사 장소가 마땅치 않으므로 도시락을 준비해가는 것을 추천한다. 바위가 만들어내는 그늘에 앉아 가벼운 피크닉을 즐기기에 더없이 좋다. /신보람
