[캄보디아 여행] 까엡에서 게 맛보기(Kep)

프놈펜에서 가장 가까운 바다는 ‘까엡’이다. 프놈펜에서 세 시간 정도만 차를 타고 달리면 한적하고 평화로운 소도시, 까엡에 도착할 수 있다. 산과 바다가 있는 까엡! 사람들은 산등성이에서 바다의 경치를 내려다보며 시원한 바닷바람을 쐬면서 차분한 휴식을 즐기기 위해 이곳을 찾는다. 그러나 차분한 휴식만 즐기다 가면 여행에 무슨 재미가 있으랴? 까엡 여행에서 빼놓을 수 없는 하이라이트는 뭐니 뭐니해도 까엡의 특산물 ‘게’를 원없이 먹어주는 것이다!

까엡에서 게를 먹거나 사기 위해서는 ‘프싸 끄담’(게시장)을 찾아가야 하는데 까엡에서 아무나 붙잡고 ‘프싸 끄담’을 물으면 쉽게 찾아갈 수 있다. ‘프싸 끄담’은 바닷가 바로 앞에 위치해 있는데 이 바다에 통발을 담가 놓고 게를 잡는다. 손님이 오거나 소매상인이 오면 수시로 바다에서 통발을 건져 직거래가 이루어진다. 이곳은 주말이나 휴일이면 게를 사러 내려온 프놈펜 사람들로 붐빈다.

까엡의 게는 일년 내내 잡힌다. 프싸 끄담에서 아침 6시부터 밤 12시까지 장이 서 있으며 대부분 ‘끄담 쎄’라고 하는 종이다. 보통 1kg에 20,000~25,000 리엘에 판매되고 명절에는 가격이 30,000리엘까지도 오르기도 한다. 프싸 끄담에서는 즉석에서 바로 잡은 싱싱한 게를 삶아 먹을 수 있는데 시장 한쪽에 게를 삶고 있는 냄비에서 김이 폴폴 나고 있는 것을 볼 수 있다. 게를 싱싱한 상태로 가져오기 위해서는 스트로폼 박스에 얼음포장을 해야 하는데 스트로폼 박스와 얼음값은 10,000~20,000리엘 정도 한다.

프싸 끄담 왼편으로 게 요리 식당들이 줄지어 있다. 이 식당가는 두 부분으로 나눠지는데 비교적 왼쪽 끝부분에 위치한 간판에 영어가 써져 있는 식당들이 외국인들을 대상으로 하는 식당이다. 이쪽 식당의 음식 가격은 약간 비싸지만 조리법이나 요리수준이 현지식당보다 나으며 분위기가 근사하다. 와인도 한잔 곁들여 먹을 수 있다. 이곳에서는 찐 게, 삶은 게, 구운 게, 볶은 게(후추 소스, 카레 소스 등), 게살 볶음밥 등의 게 요리 뿐만 아니라 새우, 오징어 등의 해산물 및 캄보디아 다른 지역에서 찾아볼 수 없는 해마요리, 가오리요리 등 다양한 해산물을 맛볼 수 있다.

워낙 향미가 풍부해서 어떻게 해 먹어도 맛있는 게 요리, 까엡에서는 삼시세끼 게 요리만 먹어도 물리지 않는다. 이것이 까엡의 매력이 아닐까?
