캄보디아 연날리기

우리나라만의 전통문화라고 알고 있었던 연날리기는 세계 곳곳에서도 찾아 볼 수 있는 풍습이며 캄보디아에서도 ‘클라엥’이라는 이름으로 연날리기가 존재한다.

특히 바람이 많이 부는 계절인 ‘로더으 틀레악 크쪌’인 11월과 12월 중에 훈센 파크나 왓 보똠 앞 공원(홍콩센타 맞은편), 꺼 뻿(다이아몬드 섬) 공터에 나가보면 연 날리는 사람들을 많이 볼 수 있다. 또한 공원 길가에서 자전거, 오토바이에 형형색색의 연들을 모아 파는 것을 볼 수 있으며 대부분 물고기, 새, 나비, 박쥐 등의 동물 모양새를 띠고 빨간색, 주황색, 형광색 등 아주 화려한 색을 띠고 있어 멀리서 봐도 어린이들의 눈길을 쉽게 사로잡는다.

캄보디아에서 연날리기의 기원은 기원전 400년 노꼬프눔 시대로 거슬러 올라간다. 당시 날렸던 연의 형태는 현재 놀이용 연과는 다른 ‘클라엥 아엑’ 이라 불리는 연이다. ‘클라엥 아엑’  앞부분에 달린 휜 연대(‘아엑’)와 바람이 마찰되면 ‘윙윙’하는 소리가 나는 특징이 있다. ‘클라엥 아엑’의 꼬리는 굉장히 길어 대형 연의 경우 20~30m 정도 꼬리를 늘어뜨리며 날기도 한다. 이 ‘클라엥 아엑’은 농사 수확기에 날리는 전통이 있다. 전통적으로 캄보디아 사람들은 연을 날리며 풍년이 들 수 있도록 해 주신 조상님들에게 감사를 표한다.

서기 972년(앙코르제국)에 새겨진 사원 비문에 의하면 연은 굉장히 신성한 물건으로 여겨졌으며, 농업이 발달한 앙코르제국시대 당시에 연날리기 행사는 국가적으로 굉장히 중대한 행사였다. 힌두교 교리에 의거 매년 우기가 시작되는 시기에는 국왕이 직접 농사의 시작을 알리는 어경절 행사를 주도했으며, 건기가 시작되는 시기에는 연날리기 의식을 주도해 농산물을 수확할 수 있는 쾌적한 날씨를 허락해주신 바람의 신에게 감사를 표했다.

1970년 크메르루즈 정권 당시 연날리기 의식도 사라졌지만 1994년 문화예술부에 의해 제1회 연날리기 대회를 재개시켰다. 당시 전국 9개 주에서 전통 연날리기 방식을 계승하는 27명을 모아 대회를 시작해 역사속으로 사라질 뻔 했던 ‘클라엥 아엑’이 다시 살아나게 됐다. 이후로 연날리기 대회는 1년에 한 번 씩 개최됐다. 작년 2011년 12월에도 꺼뻿(다이아몬드 섬) 공원에서 연날리기 대회가 열렸으며 프놈펜시 팀이 1등의 영예를 차지했다.

한편, 캄보디아 사람들은 줄이 끊어진 연이 지붕에 내려앉으면 큰 악재가 낀다고 믿고 있다.
