선거시즌 캄보디아 사람들의 행동

캄보디아 국민들은 그간의 다른 국가들과의 전쟁과 내전으로 인해 마음에 전쟁에 대한 두려움이 깊게 자리 잡혀 있다. 전쟁은 가족들을 흩어놓았고 집과 땅과 같은 재산들도 잃게 하였다. 그래서 국민들은 남녀노소 구분할 것 없이 전쟁을 두려워하고 혹여 전쟁이 날까 걱정하는 마음으로 살고 있다.

전쟁에 대한 두려움으로 인해 캄보디아 국민들은 매회 선거 때마다 정치적 의견 충돌로 인한 시위나 다툼이 큰 전쟁으로 번질까 우려하는 마음이 있다. 그래서 그들은 선거 약 한 두 달 전부터 만반의 준비를 한다. 쌀과 소금, 라면 등 각종 오래 보관할 수 있는 식료품을 사두고 은행에서 돈을 찾아온다. 선거기간엔 출금이 어려울 수도 있기 때문이다. 은행에서도 출금이 너무 많아 2013년 선거 당시 은행에서 하루에 출금할 수 있는 금액은 300달러로 제한될 정도였었다.

선거일에 프놈펜 시내를 둘러보면 평소보다 한산한데, 그 이유는 사람들이 고향으로 선거를 하러 떠났고 프놈펜 사람들이나 선거를 마치고 돌아온 사람들은 외출을 최대한 자제하고 집에서 조용히 보내기 때문이다. 로마에 가면 로마의 법을 따르라고 하는 것처럼 선거일엔 캄보디아 사람들처럼 외출을 자제하고 조용히 지내는 것이 좋을 듯 하다. 7월 29일이 총선일이다. /속 피롬, 강예송
