구급차 길 터준 학생들

프놈펜은 출퇴근 시간뿐 아니라 거의 모든 시간대에 차가 막힌다. 이러한 교통체증에 더운 날씨까지 더해져 운전자들은 먼저 가려고 하고 양보를 하지 않는다. 심지어 구급차가 사이렌을 울리며 와도 그저 제 갈 길만 가는 사람들도 많다.

하지만 교통법규를 잘 지키고 양보를 할 줄 아는 사람들도 있다. 얼마 전 프놈펜에도 두 남학생 덕분에 마음 따뜻해 지는 사건이 있었다. 두 남학생은 학교를 마치고 간식을 사 먹으러 가던 길에 뒤에서 들려 오는 구급차 사이렌 소리가 들었다. 두 학생은 퇴근길 정체로 인해 환자 이송에 어려움을 겪고 있는 구급차를 위해 오토바이를 타고 앞으로 가면서 차량들에게 길을 터 달라고 외쳤다. 이 다급한 소리를 들은 차량과 오토바이 운전자들은 급히 길을 터 구급차가 지나갈 수 있게 했다.

구급차는 무사히 병원에 도착했고 의사는 환자가 두 시간만 늦게 도착했으면 목숨이 위태로웠을 것이라고 전했다. 환자의 가족들은 두 학생에게 감사를 표하기 위해 페이스북을 통해 학생들을 찾는다는 글을 올렸고 직접 만나 감사를 표했다. 한국에서는 당연하게 생각되는 일이지만, 캄보디아에서는 시민 의식이 성장하고 있는 과정으로 보여지는 사건이었다. / 속피롬, 강예송
