어둠속에서 나는 섬뜩한 소리, 똑 까에!

‘똑 까에! 똑 까에!’ 아파트가 아닌 주택에서 사는 사람이면 누구나 들어본 소리가 있다. 한가로운 저녁시간 또는 자려고 침대에 눕는 순간 어김없이 머리위에서 이런 소리가 나곤 한다. ‘똑 까에! 똑 까에!’ 이 박력있는 동물의 울음소리는 바로 ‘똑 까에(Gecko)’ 소리다.

똑 까에 큰 도마뱀을 일컫는 말이다. 캄보디아에 살다 보면 작은 도마뱀(찡쩍)은 자주 볼 수 있는데 이러한 작은 도마뱀들은 모기를 잡아먹는다고 한다. 모기를 잡아먹어준다고 하니까.. 찡쩍까지는 웬만해서는 허용이 되지만(물론 다음날 그들의 흔적을 뒤처리하는 것은 우리의 몫이다), 똑 까에 만큼은 같이 지내기 힘들다ㅠㅠ. 왜냐하면 똑 까에는 60센티미터까지 자라는데 이는 성인 팔뚝만한 길이이다. 또한 다른 똑 까에의 관심을 끌기 위해 특유의 울음소리를 내는데 성량이 보통이 아니다. 이는 지난밤에 너희 집에서 똑까에가 울더라고 이웃집에서 듣고 말할 정도니 어느 정도인지 짐작이 갈 것이다.

‘과부 7명이 달려 들어도 똑까에를 떼어낼 수 없다’라는 캄보디아 속담이 있듯 똑까에의 악력은 대단하다. 함부로 잡으려고 하지 않는 것이 좋다. 그리고 날카로운 이빨이 있어서 물 수도 있으니 만약에 께꼬를 보게 된다면 주의하는 것이 좋다. 다행히 먼저 공격하지 않는 이상 공격을 하지는 않는다고 한다. / 장진영
