프춤번 때 하는 의식 1 – 모래 산 쌓기

캄보디아 최대 명절 중 하나인 프춤번이 다가오고 있다. 프춤번은 캄보디아 사람들이 조상들의 은혜를 생각하는 명절로 스님들에게 음식을 공양하거나, 주먹밥을 뿌리는 등 다양한 종교적인 의식을 행한다. 오늘은 ‘뿌운 프놈 크쌋’ 이라고 하는 모래산 쌓기 의식에 대해서 설명하고자 한다.

이 의식은 전국의 모든 절에서 행해지는데 무릎 높이 만큼의 모래산을 5개 정도 쌓고 그 위에 향을 피우며 옆에 준비된 함에 돈을 넣는 의식이다. 이 의식은 캄보디아 사람들이 그 동안 쌓아온 업을 씻기 위해 하는데 효험이 있다고 믿기 때문에 시간을 들여 돈도 넣고 향도 피우고 하는 것이다. 전생이나 이생에 생물을 죽이거나 타인에게 피해를 주는 등 업을 쌓은 것의 대가로 귀신들이 자신의 목숨을 탐내거나 아프거나 사고를 당하게 하고자 한다. 그런데 모래 산을 쌓고 ‘나를 해치려면 먼저 여기 있는 모래 알을 다 세어야 한다’라고 귀신에게 말하며 이 의식을 행한다. 수만, 수억 알의 모래를 다 셀 수는 없기 때문에 이렇게 하면 자신을 지킬 수 있다고 믿고 있다. 캄보디아 사람들은 프춤번 명절 때 모래산에 향을 피우고 돈을 넣으며 자신의 죄를 씻는다.
