살이 찌는 사람들, 운동을 하는 사람들

한불과 5년 전만해도 캄보디아에서 뚱뚱한 사람을 찾기란 쉽지 않았다. 그래서 캄보디아인들과 비교를 해 보면 한국인들이 굉장히 덩치가 크고 살이 쪄 보였으며, 캄보디아에서 맞는 옷을 사기도 쉽지 않았다. 하지만 최근들어 패스트푸드 점들이 많이 오픈하고, 캄보디아 사람들의 식습관이 서구화되고 밤 늦게까지 BBQ와 맥주를 마시는 문화가 생겨나면서 남자 여자 할 것 없이 점점 살이 찌고 있다.

그러면서 사람들이 날씬하고 멋진 몸매를 동경하기 시작하며 다이어트를 하는 사람들이 많아졌다. 이와 동시에 헬스장에서 운동을 하는 사람들이 많아지고 있다. 전에는 저녁 시간에 어디 나가서 운동을 하는 것이 이상한 일이었지만, 이제는 퇴근 후에 1시간 정도 땀을 빼면서 건강을 위해 운동하는 습관을 가진 사람들이 생겨나고 있다.

에어컨이 갖추어진 헬스장은 월 $40~ 씩 하며 한국 헬스장 수준의 가격을 보이지만, 길거리에 있는 평범한 캄보디아 헬스클럽은 하루 입장료 1500리엘로 매우 저렴하다. 하지만 런닝 머신이나 다른 특수한 운동기계를 사용하려면 몇 분 당 1000리엘씩 추가 금액을 내야 한다.

헬스클럽과 더불어 프놈펜 외곽을 중심으로 실내외 축구장도 많이 생기고 있다. 축구장은 ‘다랑 발’이라는 이름으로 불리는 데 보통 1시간에 $18~22씩 렌트비를 내고 축구를 즐길 수 있다. 보통 친한 친구나 직장 동료들과 축구 경기를 하는데 주로 지는 팀이 물값과 축구장비를 내는 내기를 한다.

살을 빼기 위한 운동이던, 건강을 위한 운동이던, 캄보디아 사람들 사이에 열심히 운동을 하는 문화가 생겨난 것은 좋은 일인 것 같다.
