참으로 요긴하게 쓰이는 호칭 ‘벙’

캄보디아 사람들이 가장 많이 사용하는 호칭은 무엇일까? 바로 ‘벙’이다. ‘벙’은 자신보다 나이가 많은 윗 형제를 뜻하는 캄보디아어인데 이 호칭은 직장에서도 자주 쓰이고 밖에서 사람들을 만날 때 도 쓰일 뿐만 아니라 특별한 사람(?)을 부를 때도 사용된다.

한국 사람들은 회사나 다른 곳에서 사람을 부를 때 보통 성과 직책을 섞어서 ‘김사장님’ ‘최과장님’ 이렇게 부른다. 캄보디아 사람들도 이렇게 부르기도 하지만 보통 ‘사장님’에게만 ‘록 쁘러티은’ 이라고 말한다. 그러나 직원들이 다른 매니저급 직책의 사람을 부를 때는 그냥 편하게 다른 말 없이 ‘벙’이라고만 부른다. 같은 사원들 사이에서도 입사를 더 일찍한 선배들에게 ‘벙’이라는 말을 사용한다.

식당 종업원이나 가게 점원, 회사의 접수원 등을 만났을 때도 나이가 비슷해 보이면 ‘벙’이라고 부른다. 나이가 조금 어려 보여도 예의를 지키기 ‘벙’ 호칭을 사용한다. 또한 이 호칭은 애인관계에서 여자가 남자를 부르는 ‘자기야~’라는 말로도 쓰인다. 그래서 그런지 캄보디아 노래에는 이 ‘벙’이라는 말과 남자가 여자를 부드럽게 부르는 ‘오은’이라는 말이 많이 들린다.

‘벙’호칭이 캄보디아에서 가장 많이 쓰이는 호칭이지만 나이가 많은 사람이 어린 사람들을 부르는 말로는 적당하지 않다. 그럴때는 동생을 뜻하는 ‘오은’을 쓰도록 하자. /놀 까니까
