캄보디아인들의 영원한 간식거리 ‘머쭈’:

‘머쭈’란 시고 떫은 덜 익은 과일들을 통틀어 일컫는 말이다. 대표적인 머쭈에는 덜 익은 망고, 망고 피클, 뜨러바엑(구아바) 파인애플, 대추가 있다. 한국인은 잘 모르는 머깍, 껀뚜잇, 쩜뿌, 비꾸억, 크벗 등의 캄보디아 과일들도 머쭈에 속한다. 최근들어 프놈펜시내 길거리에서 머쭈를 파는 곳이 늘어나고 있다. 특히 대학교, 학교 주변에는 머쭈를 파는 가판대가 정말 많다.

캄보디아 사람들은 보통 삼삼오오 모여 담소를 나누며 소금+고추 양념에 찍어먹는다. 강한 맛을 즐기는 사람은 까삐(젓갈소스), 쁘로혹(민물생선 젓갈)등에 찍어먹는다. 캄보디아 사람들은 ‘머쭈’라는 말만 들어도 군침을 삼킨다. 특히 청소년, 학생들 층에서 머쭈의 인기는 대단하다고 할 수 있다./재연재
